Obituary of Lawrence Edward Best

Dear Family and Friends,

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our eldest brother, Lawrence Edward Best - know to most as “Larry”. Larry had a massive stroke one week ago and was admitted to the Colchester East Hants Medical Center. He took his last breath and went home to be with the Lord today, at approximately 8:15am.

Larry was born in Ormocto, New Brunswick, on January 6, 1959. He lived with the family in Petawawa and then in London Ontario, later coming to Nova Scotia in 1977. Larry successfully completed his journeyman’s training for cooking while living in Halifax and he worked in various restaurants in the Halifax area for some time before moving to Truro. He spent the last 20 years in Truro, working for Murphy’s Fish and Chips Eatery in Truro. We can never thank Gerard and the people of Murphy’s enough; they were like family to Larry and took such good care of him, something for which we will forever be thankful.

From the time he arrived in Nova Scotia in the late 70s, and into the 80s and 90s, Larry was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved the outdoors and was often seen walking all over Pictou and Colchester Counties in search of a great fishing spot. He regularly caught many brook, lake and sea trout, and closer to home in West River, bagged many deer, partridge, and rabbits over the years.

Larry had an amazing capacity to remember names, dates and places. Anytime we were visiting him in Truro, he would point out and name people walking on the streets, or strike up conversations with people we would meet in Tim Horton’s or Sobeys. Larry was very talkative, and extremely kind and generous.

Larry was never married and had no children. Larry is survived by his 4 younger siblings, Sharon Smith (Robert Sutherland) (Westville), Patricia Chapman (Red Deer), Christine Jackson (Antigonish), and David Best (Jenny) (Hong Kong), as well as many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Gerald Albert Best (West River Station), mother Marion Rose Best (Westville), and his eldest sister, Kathy Best (London, Ont.).

Cremation will be done by Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. Larry’s family will receive visitors on the coming Wednesday, March 19, 2025, between 2:00-4:00pm. We would love to see you all and share some fond memories of Larry at that time.
