Obituary of Daniel Gilbert MacKay

It is with our heavy hearts that the family of Daniel Gilbert “Gil” MacKay, of Westville, N.S., announce his passing on May 12 in the Aberdeen Hospital, at the age of 92.

Dad was born February 22, 1933, in New Glasgow and was the only child of the late Everett and Annie May (Hattie) MacKay.

He spent his early years in Sunnybrae, Pictou County, before moving to Westville with his parents where he resided for the remainder of his life.

Dad was a truck driver during his working years and was known as “Moose” to many co-workers and fellow truck drivers. He was an active member of St. Paul United Church, Westville, having sung in the choir and served on various committees. When he was a few years younger, he enjoyed long walks and “working out my beautiful body”, an expression he would proclaim while rubbing his trucker gut and puckering his lips. He never shied away from any conversation with anyone about anything, many involving a good belly laugh. Dad truly did laugh with his whole body and soul! In later years, he enjoyed his get togethers with his coffee buddies, forming friendships that he treasured.

His most favourite times in his life were spent with our Mom, Beatrice. They met as teenagers, fell in love, and together raised their family. They took several trips, and went on countless drives, sometimes the destination was unknown, but most often it was to visit loved ones near and far, while enjoying each other’s company the whole way. Dad never stopped missing her when she passed and it is our family’s hope that they are together again in peace.

Dad is survived by his children Everett, Shelley, Kevin (Chrissy), and Glen (Dawn). His grandchildren Stephen (Kelly), Stacey (Stephen), James, Erika, Tamara, Colby (Kristen), Carson, Jessie, and Lacey. His great grandchildren Luke, Gabrielle, Georgia, Maya, Madison, Maddox, Sawyer, Lucas, and Myles. His sisters in law Hilda Allen and Betty Fitt, cousin June Gaston, nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed the addition to our family of Jorji, Isla, and Violet.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Beatrice (Fitt), sister in law Jean Melanson, brothers in law Bill Allen, Sonny Fitt, Ken Melanson, and Lowell Spencer. Along with cousins, aunts, and uncles.

At Dad’s request, there will be no funeral service or visitation. A graveside committal service, open to family and friends, will take place on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 2pm  in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens with Rev. Dr. Mary Taylor presiding.

Donations in Dad’s memory may be made to St. Paul United Church, Westville or a charity of one’s choice.
