Obituary of Garry Penrose Hope

It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Garry Penrose Hope, who died peacefully at Glen Haven Manor in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

Born on July 17, 1945, Garry grew up with a love for sports, excelling in football and track during his high school years. He began his career with CIBC in Newmarket, Ontario, where he was a valued employee, and later spent a memorable year working at the bank in the Bahamas. He went on to serve as an auditor for the Attorney General in Ontario, a position that allowed him to travel widely and form many lasting friendships.

Faith and music were important parts of Garry’s life. In his younger years, he sang joyfully in the choir at Trinity United Church in Newmarket, and after moving to Nova Scotia, he continued to share his love of music with the congregation of St. Paul’s United Church in Westville.

Garry will be fondly remembered for his booming laughter—you often heard him before you saw him. A gifted conversationalist, he loved meeting people and making them feel at ease. His commitment to community was evident in his active involvement with the Masons, Eastern Star, and Shriners.

Family was central to Garry’s heart. He was much loved by his nieces and nephews, with whom he shared many adventurous “lion hunts.” His grandchildren will cherish the memory of his hilarious readings of The Wonky Donkey—moments filled with laughter and joy.

Garry is survived by his devoted wife, Marianna; his daughters, Karina Hope of Salem, NS, and Laura (Marko) Peric of Montague, PE; and his beloved grandchildren, Sean, Emma-Lyn, Nathaniel, and Levi. He is also survived by his brother Maxwell (Karen) Hope of Newmarket, ON; brother- and sister-in-law Frank and Holly Wuite of Salem, NS; brother- and sister-in-law John and Judi Wuite of Edmonton, AB; and many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister Mary Jane Bekin (Barry) of Brampton, ON; his brother John Hope (Gwen) of Fenelon Falls, ON; and his sister Fran Greig of Newmarket, ON.

Garry’s warmth, laughter, and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Alma Fire Hall from 2-4pm on Friday, October 17th, 2025.
