Obituary of Wilfred Charles Grist
Wilfred Charles Grist of New Glasgow passed away peacefully after a short illness on February 28, 2026, at the age of 95.
Born in Westville, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late George and May (Humphries) Grist.
Wilfred began working at Ferguson’s Store in his youth, learning early the value of hard work and community. After graduation, he dedicated 39 years to Maritime Tel and Tel. It was there, while repairing a family phone line, that he met the love of his life, Helen. They were married in 1953 and built a life grounded in devotion, raising three children with unwavering support and steady guidance, and creating a home filled with love and laughter. Wilf and Helen shared a joy for old time dances and the simple pleasures of life together. Wilf could rarely resist a patch of ice, skating whenever and wherever he had the chance. His greatest happiness was found at the family cottage in Caribou River, where he faithfully swam his daily laps and even marked his 94th birthday with a swim, a true reflection of his enduring spirit.
He is survived by his sons Ken (Cindy) and Kevin (Charlene), and his daughter Lauren; his brother Walter; his adored grandchildren Andrea (Colin), Jennifer (Phil), Greg, Christine (Scott), Ash, and Alex; and his cherished great grandchildren Braeden, Norah, Addison, and Elliot.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Helen; sisters Alma (Frank), Daisy (Art), and Lily (George); his brothers George and Frank (Jackie); and his son in law Gordon.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Maritime IOOF Recreation Department. We will forever be grateful for the love and friendship at The Maples in Antigonish and The Maritime Oddfellows Home and the extraordinary care from Dr. Barclay, Dr. Schnare, and the staff at the Aberdeen Hospital.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, March 7, from 1:00 to 1:50 p.m. at Eagles Funeral Home, with a funeral service and reception to follow.
