Obituary of Agnes Phoebe Sample

Agnes Phoebe Sample, age 102, of the Northumberland Veterans’ Unit in Pictou, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2026.

Born in Westville, Agnes was the daughter of the late Fred and Agnes Christina (MacMillan) Saunders. She was a lifelong resident of Westville and remained in her own home until the age of 101.

Agnes attended school in her community and was a long-time, devoted member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Westville. She had a deep love for arts and crafts, especially Japanese embroidery (bunka) and leatherwork, which she enjoyed throughout her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Karen Sample (Bedford); nieces Valerie Millen (Grand Cayman) and Patricia Crumback (Ontario); and nephews Donald Saunders Jr. (Union Center) and John Frederick Clarke (USA).

Agnes was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Robert “Hud” Sample; her brothers, William Saunders and Donald Saunders Sr.; and her sisters, Winnifred Clarke and Freda Millen.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to friends and neighbours—especially Darren, Lynn, Donna, and Helen—whose kindness, support, and companionship allowed Agnes to remain in her home for as long as possible. Special thanks are also extended to the staff of the Seniors’ Clinic at the Northumberland Veterans’ Unit in Pictou for their professional and compassionate care.

No visitation or funeral service will be held by request. A graveside service will take place at a later date.
