Obituary of Dan Stewart

Daniel William Stewart, age 80, of Westville, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, with his wife at his side. Born in New Glasgow, on October 2, 1936, he was a son of the late John “Cotton” and Josie (Rondelet) Stewart. In his early years he had worked for Barkers, Sobey’s, Carrigan’s Grocery, and Foley’s Fish Market. Dan was an auto mechanic by trade, first operating service stations in Plymouth and Hopewell, as well as the Esso in Westville. In the early 1960's he acquired Wright’s Irving Station on Main Street, Westville. He operated this as D.W. Stewart’s Garage for 26 years until his retirement in 1989. When not working on a weekend he could be found camping at a lake fishing. After retiring from the service station, Dan and his wife took a keen interest in the care of the Auburn Cemetery, where he was serving as Manager and President until present day. Dan was a member of the Westville Business Association and was instrumental in introducing civic numbers for the Town of Westville. He will be dearly missed by his wife Rita (Pitts); son Mark (Stania), Toronto; grandchildren, Erik and Anna; brother Allan (Joan), Truro; nephew Kevin, Toronto; niece Kim MacDonald, Truro; sister-in-law Jessie Busby, New Glasgow; and cousins, Lottie Stewart, Westville and Nina MacNeil, Westville. He was predeceased by his daughter Gale and infant brother Douglas. His family received visitors on Sunday at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. His memorial service was held at 1 o’clock Monday Nov. 14 from Eagles Funeral Chapel, Westville with interment in the Auburn Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the V.O.N. or the Auburn Cemetery.
