Obituary of Vernon DeMings

Vernon Read DeMings, age 94, of Loch Broom formerly of Green Hill, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2016 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Conns Mills, he was a son of the late Claude and Bessie DeMings. Vernon was a long time employee of R.A. Douglas Construction, where he was general superintendent, his work brought him throughout the Atlantic Provinces. Vernon was a founding member of the Alma Fire Dept., being their first Deputy Chief. He would always stop and give a hand to a friend or neighbour in need, but never looked for anything in return. Vernon is survived by his wife Esther (Darroch); daughter Debi Baird, Mill Brook; son Greg (Cathy), Mt. Thom; grandchildren, Jennifer Perry (Andrew), Halifax, Darryl Rutledge (Justine), Ont., Jackie Rutledge (Allen Young), Mill Brook, Dale DeMings (Karen), Halifax, Dana DeMings (Sandie), New Glasgow; great-grandchildren, Hailey Young; Sydney and Ashley DeMings; Quinn and Kerin DeMings and step grandchildren Craig and Lindsay MacDonald. He was predeceased by his son-in-law James “Jim” Baird on Saturday evening; brother Kenneth and sister Kaye. Vernon rested at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville with visiting on Wednesday, November 30. His funeral service was held on Thursday, December 1 at Eagles Funeral Chapel, Westville with Rev. Charles MacPherson officiating. Burial will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. Donations in his memory may be made to the S.P.C.A. or a charity of one’s choice.
