Obituary of Bill Harris

Wilfred “Bill” Harris, age 87, passed away on February 14th, 2020 in the Palliative Care Unit, at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow. Born in Knutsford, Prince Edward Island the son of the late Arthur and Annie (McNeil) Harris and grew up the youngest of four children. Bill served in the Canadian Air Force for 25 years and then worked for the Public Service in Halifax until his retirement to Central West River in 1987. He was an active member of his community and served at length on the Board of Trustees at St. Luke’s United Church. Bill had a great pride and love for working alongside his wife Carol, maintaining their homestead property until his health subsequently declined. In his retirement years he enjoyed yearly travels in the motorhome with Carol that took them throughout the United States as far as the Gulf of Mexico in winter, Grand Manan Island in summer, and several longer trips to Europe. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Annie; his wife, Carol; a son, Robert; and brothers, Spurgeon (Rillie), and Loman (Louise); and sister, Jessie Ashley (Harold). Bill is survived by his son Gary(Deb); stepchildren, Susan Logue (Richard), Fern McCuish (Scott Saunders), Dean McCuish, Krista McCuish (Tim Garriock); seven grandchildren, Adam Basler, Corrina Basler, Andrew Logue, Mark Logue, Peter Lang, Leah Garriock, and Ewan Garriock; special nieces, Carol Landoll (Tom) and Sharon Lang (John) as well as several other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bill will always be remembered as someone with a great sense of humour and quick wit. His kindness and generous spirit will be remembered by many. Bill will be greatly missed and will hold a special place in our hearts. Funeral services were held on 25th February at 2 pm at St. Luke’s United Church, Salt Springs with Rev. Jim Webber-Cook officiating. The family would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to several members of the community who extended a helping hand to Bill in his final years: his minister Rev. Jim Webber-Cook, George and Shelley Smith, Bob and Sylvia Love, Cheryl and Troy Lees, Bob Parker, and Reta Heron. The family is also grateful to Dr Randy Burrill and Dr Kwasnik as well as all the staff at the Victoria Order of Nurses in Pictou County, and the Aberdeen Palliative Care Unit in New Glasgow.
