Obituary of Mary Lou MacLaughlin

The world will not be the same without Mary Lou MacLaughlin, who passed away peacefully at the Aberdeen Hospital on April 12, 2021, at the age of 67, with “her girls” Melissa and Jen by her side.

Mary Lou was born in 1953 in the Garden of Eden in Pictou County, daughter of the late Susan Paige MacLaughlin and William Henry MacLaughlin.

Mary Lou attended school in the Garden of Eden and Blue Mountain before taking additional skills training in Truro.  Growing up, Mary Lou always looked forward to visiting with her many aunts, uncles and cousins from Truro.  After her father passed away, Mary Lou remained living with her mother, enjoying a close relationship and becoming her steady companion.

Mary Lou was a genuinely sweet and gentle person, who touched many lives with her infectious smile, wonderful sense of humour and thoughtful generous spirit.  She had an amazing memory for dates and always acknowledged birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions with a personal card or phone call.  Mary Lou will be remembered for being an expert puzzler who enjoyed listening to country music and loved cats, especially her cat Tiger.  Her fondness for sweets was well known, with fudge and cherry cheesecake topping her list of favourites.   Being very social and young at heart, Mary Lou was always up for an outing, whether it was going to a restaurant, shopping, attending events at Summer Street Industries, or visiting with friends and family.  She loved making trips to Calgary every few years to visit her brother and family, always bringing small gifts for everyone, and always with a list of places she wanted to go and people she wanted to see.

Mary Lou will be dearly missed by her brother Bill Fisher (Jean); cousin Pat Gillin (Bill); close relative Allan MacLaughlin; special friends Mary Helen, Anita and Lori Ann; her nieces and nephews: Suzzanne Jalsoviczky (Charles), Robert Fisher, Keith Fisher (Angela), Cheryl Maddalo (Sab), Joanne Colbert (Kevin), Rosalyn Chiew (Jimmy) and Janet Fisher;  her great-nieces and great-nephews; and many other friends and relatives.

A special thanks to all the staff and residents at Shady Oaks and Office Street for their caring and kindness towards Mary Lou over the years; they were like family to her.

A public funeral service will be held on Friday April 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at the Eagles Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bonnie Langille officiating.  Please call 902-396-4144 to register for the funeral service.
