Dear Eleanor , Sandy and families ,
Your beautiful tribute to your Mom encapsulated her perfectly ! Your text and photos have drawn me back here several times a day, each time stirring up more memories. When we were small she was the cool aunt who could skate, she brought us Christmas PJs, and the excitement of hosting her wedding reception.(Big times for our crew). As the years went by she remained a big part of our lives and we all loved her dearly. You always knew where you stood with Connie and her approval was important to all of us. She completed so many holidays for us with traditional Christmas pudding(just like Nannies),and it's not Canada Day without Connies strawberry pie. For many years, a trip to Westville would be incomplete without a few feisty games of Canasta ( and you had better pull your weight if you'r her partner!!). Those were the best of times !! She was truly one of a kind! May the memories of a life well lived bring you all comfort .Rest in peace dear Aunt Connie.
Love Karen & Ron

So sorry for your sad loss Eleanor, Sandy and families.Connie was wonderful company and the best roommate for my Mom (Frances) for a long time at the Villa. I always enjoyed seeing her on my visits to Mom, and checking on her progress with whatever jigsaw puzzle she was working on. She would always say “I don’t think I’m going to be able to do this one”, but that stubborn streak always got it done! May all of your happy memories comfort you at this sad time.

Thank you, Anne. I just came across a Christmas card from Frances when we were cleaning out her room. Frances was the perfect roommate for mom-we both missed her very much when she moved. Your comment about mom and her puzzles was spot on-those were her words for every puzzle she was working on, but her stubborn streak usually won out!

Thank you, Bob and Pat. You were certainly good neighbors to Mom and Dad. I remember lots of berry picking over the years-especially to Trafalgar for blueberries and the best dessert I had ever tasted-I think they may have been Hello Dolly Squares? I have tried to replicate them over the years but nothing has compared to that first taste I had of yours. Eleanor

What I remember best about Connie is that she was a caring neighbor and friend to my family all my life. I used to stay overnight to play with Eleanor and Sandy and she would take me along to church on Sunday mornings. I remember her wonderful squares - my favorite was her rice crispy squares. At Christmas, when my dad was on his own, she always baked extra gum drop loaves for him and I loved them! Connie was a wonderful role model and she leaves behind a legacy of love and service to others in her children and grandchildren. From the Merk family to all of you - I send condolences.

Thank you, Mandy for your kind words. We sure had many good years growing up together, didn't we? I had no idea that mom brought her gumdrop loaf to Bill. Sandy and I both make them now...we will be sure to have some on hand next time you are in Pictou County-if we can get the Ganong gumdrops! They were nowhere to be found last Christmas. Hugs, Eleanor

I was so sorry to hear of Connie’s passing. She became a good friend of mine when I came to Haven Brook. I know she liked reading, doing puzzles and eating fudge that I sneaked in to her.You have lots of memories Ellie. Keep them in you heart.

Hello Dear Henrietta. Thank you for these kind words and all of your kindnesses shown to mom over the years-even throughout covid you were still getting your delicious fudge into mom. God she loved your fudge. I wish you could have seen the pleasure it gave her, and the adorable little sheepish smile when she admitted that she ate all of it in one sitting! Mom never had a sweet tooth until she tasted your fudge.
We sure had some fun mealtimes over the years, didn't we? Hugs, Ellie

Thank you Eileen and Jim. Mom and Helen were the best of friends, weren't they? Mom made the trek down to the bottom of Coll Ave every week for quite a few years after Helen retired. I had forgotten all about that until I read this here. So nice to hear from you, Eleanor
