Barry was a role model, a shining light of strong moral values. Above all he was consistent: consistently kind and generous, consistently patient and understanding. Consistently a lover of good scotch. Consistently a Montreal Canadiens fan and consistently letting me win in cribbage. You could always count on Barry to be Barry.
There was only one Barry Wark and Lynda and I will surely miss him.

Barry was one of my key mentors in the military. His attention to detail and his insistence in "preparing the ground', in every context, were lessons I never forgot. As well as being my direct commander, twice, he was also a friend. I was truly honoured to be at his graveside ceremony today. Colleen and I extend our truest condolences to Brenda and his family. The toast at the graveside was so appropriate.

Dear Brenda and family,
I am so heart broken to receive the news that Barry has passed. Barry was one of the smartest, kindest men I have ever known. Truly a one of a kind gentleman. I am honoured to have met such a soul and been part of both Barry and Brenda’s lives. I will truly cherish the memories we have made together making wine and gardening, among other things. Barry and Brenda came into my life as an employer, hiring me as a caretaker to help out around the property until my schooling and carreer led me in other directions. Barry was always very supportive of my choices and always enjoyed hearing about my new chosen carreer and achievements. I will never forget the kindness and support I have received from the Warks over the years. I started as a helper and left as a life long friend. I will always cherish our friendship.

My sincere condolences to the Wark family. My reminiscence of Colonel Wark will, I hope, bring a smile to your face. I met Col Wark in the 1986-89 timeframe when we both served at (then) AMA HQ in Halifax, in the old H-huts at the foot of Citadel Hill. I was a young artillery Captain just posted from Germany (1 RCHA) to a position within the HQ working with the Reserves. Colonel Wark (LCol at that time) was SSO Ops & Trg and I was his SO3, a couple of layers removed from him! I wasn't sure how to take these reservists I worked with - they just weren't like us Reg Force types. But Colonel Wark dispelled any preconception I had of reservists. I saw that here was a man so completely dedicated to his profession and his nation that I was taken aback. He would drive hours from Pictou County to attend the Thursday evening parade at the HQ and every Saturday HQ parade saw him there as well. And he was smart! For the first time in my career I saw that there was more to officership then just soldiering and knowing one's craft. I'll put it this way - I learned, lots, from Colonel Wark and I'd like to think that stayed with me through my 37 year Army career. When I got to know him we would sometimes sit and chat about his time with the guns many, many years before; who he served with, and where. At that time, with me only a few years in, I scarcely knew what he was talking about, but now I understand how much those years meant to him. I really admired the Colonel - he was a fine man, a gentleman and a true role model for me.

I am grieved at the loss of my favourite CO in the Highlanders. Under CO Wark, our Pipes and Drums achieved Champion Supreme Grade 3, not once, but twice. His support of the band was unparalleled. I guarantee that this old piper will play you the Lament on August 1, Sir! Stand Down, Sir, your duty is over.

Brenda & Family,
Our deepest condolences on the passing of a logtime, good friend, dating all the way back to 1990. We have so many great memories of our times together, whether in the Army, Commissionaires, as Honoraries or just plain good friends.
Barry was a deep thinking, yet very practical man, and his straightforward advice was often sought by others. I know that I benefitted from it on several occasions.
Miriam and I have such great memories of many pleasant hours spent with Barry and Brenda, from Pictou County to Halifax to right across Canada.
A fine gentleman.
RIP soldier; duty done.

Dear Brenda and Family,
On behalf of the Officers and Soldiers of the Nova Scotia Highlanders please accept our heartfelt condolences on your loss. Brenda, you and Barry have been stalwart supporters of the Regiment for many year's and Colonel Wark was an officer that subordinates could always count on as they progressed within the unit. Through many spirited discussions on Dress and Deportment and Regimental traditions I could always count on his sage advice and the Regiment remains better for it. May he now stand shoulder to shoulder with others of the Regiment who have fallen before him and ensure that the route will be lined for the arrival of the Pipes and Drums leading others who will join our fallen in the future.
