Russell Canning

Obituary of Russell Canning

It is with profound sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Russell Canning on July 10, 2023 following complications days after bypass surgery in Halifax.

Russell was born May 30, 1952 the son of Dorothy (Chisholm) Canning, Westville and the late Russell Alan Canning.  Russell was the second of nine siblings.

Russell spent many years in Westville.  He enjoyed working on , and trading cars.  It was a surprise each day to see what car he would be driving.  He enjoyed CB Radio, where he met Debbie, the love of his life.  Together they had one daughter and their family was complete.  He then got interested in Amateur Radio, best known as VE1 RC, and met many friends from all over the world.  He had several jobs, but was employed at Sobeys Distribution Centre where he worked as a mechanic for over 30 years, and was proud of never missing a day.

In the mid 1990's Russell and his family moved to Merigomish.  He adored living there, enjoyed doing all the home improvements, and helping Debbie with her gardens.  In May of 2001, he became an amazing Grandfather to his one and only grandchild, who he cherished deeply.  During his later years, especially, he would enjoy her company for a nightly coffee trip.  He wasn't much for travel, although he enjoyed many day trips, Sunday drives on dirt roads, and Country music.

His heart was heavy when they relocated to Trenton to be closer to health care due to his heart condition.  However, he found joy again fishing with friends in Pictou, and weeks away with family in Lockeport.  Russell was devastated when in 2012, Debbie was diagnosed with cancer, and passed away in October of the following year.  The years following were difficult for him, as his health continued to deteriorate, he was unable to do the things he liked to do.  However he still enjoyed sipping his Tim's coffee and parking at the bottom of the mall parking lot like he did every night for many years.  Those closest to him will be reminded of him when they drive by and he isn't in his spot.

Although it is a sad time we are glad he is at peace and back with Debbie whom he missed so much.

Russell is survived by his mother Dorothy;  daughter Stephanie;  granddaughter Emma;  brothers, Jack (Pamela), Clayton (Donna), Donald (Susan);  sisters, Cathy Van den Eyden, Mary Jane Marcott (Louis);  sisters in law, Charlene, Pam Cameron (James);  brother in law Ian Langille (Ron);  as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Russell was predeceased by his wife of 38 years Debbie;  father Russell Alan;  sister Ruth;  brothers Chet and David;  nephews David Allen and Rob;  father and mother in law Robert and Connie Langille.

Cremation has taken place.  Arrangements will be announced at a later time.

Thank you to the nurses and doctors and the cardiac surgeons in both Halifax and New Glasgow for all you help.  Donations may be made to his daughter and granddaughter, as he always tried to help them the best he could, or to a charity of your choice.
