Obituary of Martin Leonardis Sanders
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Martin Sanders, age 83, of Granton, Nova Scotia, who left the world peacefully on October 25, 2024 at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in North Brabant, Holland, Martin was the son of the late Anthony and Theodora (Vandeven) Sanders. At the tender age of 10, he and his family embarked on a new chapter, immigrating to Canada and arriving at Pier 21 in December 1951. This move marked the beginning of a life dedicated to hard work.
Martin's younger years were spent labouring in the woods, where he deceloped a profound respect for nature and the land. Never afraid of hard work, Martin spent his career in the construction industry until his retirement from Weeks Construction.
Outside of work, Martin filled his days with the simple pleasures of life. He treasured time spent with his best friends and coffee buddies, Jim and Alec. He took great joy in fishing, leisurely walks, and nuturing his cherished garden. Every tree that he planted in his yard held a unique story and a special place in his heart.
Martin's kindness, warm spirit, and love for family and friends will be deeply missed. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, gratitude for life's simple joys, and stories only he could tell.
He was predeceased by his brother Leo Sanders, sister Lena MacKay, and his infant sister Elizabeth. His family legacy continues with his surviving brothers Tony Sanders (Lena) and Francis Sanders, as well as his devoted sisters Mary MacCormack, Thea Hayberts, and Joanne Goodair (Barry).
In keeping with his wishes, Martin's ashes will be laid to rest next to his parents and sister at the Holy Name Cemetery, Westville. A graveside service will be held at the cemetery on Thursday, October 31, 2024 at 11:00 am with Father Peter MacDonald presiding.
