Obituary of Josephine Piek

Anna Josephine Piek (Josie) (nee MacDonald), 91, of Westville Road, Pictou County passed away on January 16, 2025 in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit.

Funeral service will be held at the Church of the Holy Name, Westville, on Monday, January 20 at 11 AM.  Committal in Spring. Visitation will be held at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville on Sunday, January 19, at 2 to 4 PM.

Josie was born in New Glasgow on August 26, 1933 to Elizabeth and Hugh MacDonald. She worked various jobs as a young woman in Montreal, upstate New York, and Pictou and Antigonish counties.

Josie had many hobbies. She was an avid gardener. She enjoyed square and round dancing. In her later years she took up painting on canvases and rocks. She loved reading biographies and going on Sunday drives. Her family was her pride and joy and she was fiercely protective of them. Adrian and Josie ran a corner store in their early years together. Josie was famous for her infectious laugh.

She is survived by her husband Adrian—to whom she was married for 68 years; her five children Henry Piek, Adrian Piek Jr., Joanne (Mark) DuPlessis, John (Krista) Piek and Joselyn Piek. She had nine grandchildren; Samantha (Jeff), Bekkie, Matt, Ben (Emma), Jeff, Olivia, Morgan (Alex), Jordan and Grayson and three great grandchildren; Shila, Jeffrey and Adrian.

She is also survived by a sister, Muriel Roper of Wisconsin, and pre-deceased by eleven siblings.

Special thanks to Julia and the other nurses on the fourth floor and the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital who helped make her final moments peaceful and comfortable.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of NS or a local food bank.
