Obituary of John Chennell
John James Chennell, 89, Cowan Street, Westville, passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2011 in the Northumberland Veteran’s Unit, Pictou, NS.
Born in Westville, he was the youngest son of the late John and Ann (Pieclo) Chennell.
John’s earliest working years were as a miner in the Drummond, he was also a driver for Ben’s Bread, but found his true niche in the early sixties when he went to work at Trenton Works, retiring at sixty-five as Millwright Supervisor. He had a strong work ethic, a dry wit, and was a master at practical jokes.
Dad enjoyed playing his accordion, riding his lawn tractor, tending his garden and spending time in his garage where many stories were told around his roaring stove fires. John was also a veteran of WWII.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Rose (Vigneault); daughters, Marilyn Osmond, Westville; Barbara Chennell (Pierre), St. Henri, Quebec; Joyce Fraser (Dan), Westville; sons, Walter (Debbie), Dartmouth and Tom (Wendy), New Glasgow; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his great grand-daughter Carsen Austin.
John was the last surviving member of his immediate family, predeceased by brothers Frank, Walter, Joe, Tommy, and Mike and by sisters, Mary Porter (Robert) and Margaret Porter (Murray).
Visitations will be held from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Monday in the Church of the Holy Name, Westville with Father Evo DiPierro officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Name Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Northumberland Veteran’s Unit, Pictou, or a charity of your choice.
