Obituary of Dorothy Haslam

Dorothy (Dot) Winnifred Haslam, 86, Lower North Street, Westville, passed away on Monday, May 30, 2011 in the Aberdeen Hospital. Born in Country Harbour Lake on June 24, 1924, she was a daughter of the late George and Lily Belle (Smith) White. Dorothy came to Pictou County as a very young woman and worked at the Pictou Shipyards during World War II. On April 9, 1946, Dorothy married Lewis Haslam and they built a home and raised their children in Westville. Family was everything to Dot and she was happiest when they all gathered at home for Christmas Eve, July 1st, special occasions and family get-togethers. She was a wonderful mother and mother-in- law and a proud "Nannie" of her grandchildren. She gave her children and grandchildren unconditional love and totally supported them in whatever they chose to do. In recent years she enjoyed visits, pictures and stories about her great-grandchildren. "Dode" was the cherished sister of her ten sisters and brothers, and treasured the life-long closeness, extended visits and telephone calls they shared. Dot enjoyed playing cards and going to bingo. In their retirement years, she and Lew were members of the Westville Heritage Group where they sang in the choir, enjoyed dancing and skits and bowled with the seniors. As her health failed, Dot was lovingly cared for by her devoted children, her special Newfoundland ladies, Carol, Ruby and Marie and the dedicated staff at the Shiretown Nursing Home. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Lynn (Don) MacDougall, Pictou Landing Road; sons Bill (Cathy), White Hill Road; Jim (Debbie) , Oakbank, MB; Hank (Judy) and David (Susan), Hamilton Road; 14 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren: Don (Susan), Heather, Allison and Elizabeth MacDougall; Kenda (Colin), Eric, and Jillian Murray; Ashley (Sarah), Emily and Wyatt MacDougall; Billy Haslam, Beth (Jalil), Soumaya, Safiyah, Maryam and Ahmed Marhnouj; Laurie (Jason), Brett and Claire Gibson; Ian Haslam; Allison and Aaron Haslam; Amy (Lloyd) Hayden; Luke (Kim) and Madison Haslam; Katie (Mark) Hale; Adele (Rob) and Scott Haslam. Dorothy is also survived by sisters Vera Johnston, Nel Schuett, Nina (Oley) Giffin, Dolly Johnston, and Allie (Roy) Sutherland and brother Geordie (Bernie) White. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Lewis Haslam; brothers, Edgar, Bill and Bob White and sister, Margaret (Mid) Chabassol. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 1, from 2- 4 and 7-9 at Eagles Funeral Home in Westville.
