Obituary of Irene J. MacDonald
Irene J. MacDonald, Green Hill, Pictou Co., passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2012, in Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow.
As unassuming as she lived, Irene took a look into 2012 and decided the fight was too great and very quickly just went home.
Irene was born in Murray River, P.E.I., to George O. and Gertie (Giddings) Whiteway. She married Alvin in 1951 and moved to the farm in Green Hill where she remained until poor health took her into Glen Haven Manor last February
Although she always wanted to be behind the scenes, she spent her life supporting the Green Hill-Alma United Church and Estelle U.C.W., the Alma Fire Department and the many farm organizations Alvin was a part of. Whether making full dinners for a harvest crew of 12 men or Alvin’s daily dinner at the same time for over 50 years, she was content in her home. She loved flowers and planting her beds each spring and was famous for her African Violet green thumb. Till the day of her death, her afternoon TV programs were almost sacred and coming to visit during them or calling not advised!!!
Irene is survived by her daughter Jean Kirk (Grant); her son Donnie (Donna); grandchildren, Duncan Kirk (Susan), Andrew Kirk (Tammy), Heather Aabed (Abdul); Jessica MacDonald and Gavin MacDonald (Chelsea); two great-granddaughters, Kylee and Camryn. She is also survived by her brother Stirling Whiteway (Janet), Montague, PEI; and several nieces and nephews across Canada.
She was predeceased by her husband Alvin B.; grandson Ian Kirk; and brother Harry Whiteway.
Services are under the direction of Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. . Her funeral service was held from Green Jill- Alma Church with Rev. Marilyn MacDonald officiating. Interment was in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. Donations in her memory may be made to the Green Hill-Alma United Church.
