Obituary of Jack Roy

John “Jack” Robert Roy, 89, of Westville, passed away in the Northumberland Veterans Unit, Pictou on January 4, 2012. Jack was born in Westville NS on August 3, 1922, the son of the late Gus and Ethel Roy. After completing school in Westville, Jack learned his plumbing trade while working at Crockets Hardware in Westville and Hayman’s Plumbing in Stellarton, as did his father before him. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and served in Britain during WWII maintaining aircraft in Bomber Command. He was an active sportsman during his youth and especially enjoyed playing softball with RCAF teams during World War II. After returning home from the war he worked with his father at Gus Roy & Son Plumbing and Heating in Westville. He went on to work as a pipefitter in the industrial construction industry, helping build oil refineries, heavy water plants and paper mills from Newfoundland to British Columbia. He was a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters. Jack retired to Pictou County in 1990 where he enjoyed playing golf and weekly card games with his friends. His collection of books and DVD’s on quantum physics, world religions, and popular board games will find a new and appropriate home. Jack was predeceased by his parents and by his brother Vincent. He is survived by his seven children John (Maxine), Perth Australia, Linda Fox, Toronto, Terry, Edmonton, Richard, Calgary, Robert (Liz Van den Eynden), Kingshead, Katie MacDonald (Sandy) Black Point and Ken (Louis-Elyan Martin), Montreal, as well as seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Jack’s family is very grateful for the incredibly caring environment the staff at the Veterans Unit provided him this past 1 1/2 years. In addition to your medical professionalism you challenged him intellectually, a challenge that helped maintain meaning in his life. Thank you for your compassion and all your kind words to us about our father. You’ve all earned Jack’s gold star. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation and a family service will be held at a later date. Donations in Jack’s name can be made to the Veteran’s Unit Comfort Account, or to any charity of choice.
