Harriet Mae "Hattie" MacKenzie. 96 ?The family of Harriet MacKenzie regret to announce her passing on April 13th at Maplestone Nursing Home. ?Born in Millbrook on July 12, 1916, she is the last surviving family member of Duncan and Isabel MacKenzie. ?She is survived by daughter Belva (John) Mills. ?She was the grandmother of Christopher (Sheila) Mills and Tara (Mike) Power who were her pride and joy. ?They in turn enriched her life with three great grandchildren: Julia and Samuel Power and John Mills. ?She is also survived by sisters-in-law Lillian (John) and Jean (Clarence) MacKenzie and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by sisters: Catherine Porter, Isabel Budgell, Jessie Porter and Anna MacKenzie and brothers: Hector, John, Charles and Clarence. ?She was also predeceased by special niece Marilyn (Mamie) MacLeod. ?Hattie served in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (CWAC) from 1941 to 1946 and then with the Canadian Army retiring with the rank of Warrant Officer II. ?She then worked in the libraries of both Saint Mary's University and NSCAD where they presented her with a honorary Librarian degree. ?In retirement she was an organizer and doer. ?She was President of Elderobics Nova Scotia from 1995 to 1997. ?She organized league tournaments for the Early Risers' Bowling League and was Secretary of the Tenants' Association of the Seniors Residence, MacDonald Laurier Place where she lived for many years. ?She volunteered for the Fairview United Senior's Luncheons and at the veterans' wing at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building. ?She loved crafting, gardening, playing bingo, baking, and spending time with her families in Pictou County and at the family cottage on Sherbrooke Lake.??Cremation has taken place and, in keeping with her wishes, there will be no visitation. ?A private family burial, under the direction of Eagles Funeral Home in Westville, will be held at a later date in Millbrook Cemetery. ?Donations may be made to the Millbrook Cemetery Fund or charity of your choice. ?Thank you to the staff at Maplestone (especially Kristen) for the wonderful care she received.
