Obituary of Mary Rose MacKenzie

Mary Rose "Rosie" (MacKay) MacKenzie, peacefully passed away on April 13, 2013 at Valley View Villa, with her granddaughter by her side, 10 days shy of her 100th birthday. Rosie was born on April 23, 1913 in Tony River to the late Christine (MacKay) and Edward MacKay. She lived most of her life on the farm in Brookland, Pictou County and the last 12 years in Stellarton. In 1963, Rosie was one of the members involved in reorganizing the Saltsprings Chapter of the Women’s Institute, she held many offices and was a life member until the chapter disbanded in 2001. She loved her flower and vegetable gardens. Rosie also enjoyed travel and had the opportunity to visit Salmon Arm, BC, Alsask, SK and Orillia, ON on a few occasions. Rosie also played cards every Tuesday night at the Stellarton Seniors Building. Rosie was predeceased by her husband of 52 years John Alexander MacKenzie in 1991, her parents, Edward and Christie MacKay, sisters Emmaline, Minnie, Viola, Hazel, and Mabel; brothers Bill, Jim, Wesley, Carl, John, Harry, and George, and daughter Mildred Crowe. She is survived by her daughters Phyllis (Donald) O’Brien, New Glasgow, Erma (Dale) Obee, Orillia, Ontario, son Jack (Bonnie) MacKenzie, Mt Thom, son-in-law John Crowe, Kentville, NS, and brother Howard (Marjorie) MacKay, Prince George, BC. Grandchildren Barbara O’Brien (John Swansburg) New Glasgow, Debbie (Jeff) Wynn, Jo-Anne O’Brien, Stellarton, Mark (Patsy) Obee, Orillia, Ontario, Cathy (Doug) Tingley, Florenceville, New Brunswick, Angela (Paul) Boudreau, Truro, Jennifer (Paul) MacLean, Green Hill, Carron Moore, Cheryl Crowe (Bruce Norton), Shelley Crowe (Perry Swanburg), Kentville. Great grandchildren Kelsey, Nathan, and Abby Wynn, Stellarton, Jerica and Amelia Obee, Orillia, Ontario, Meredith and Olivia Tingley, Florenceville, New Brunswick, MacKenzie, Ainsley and Owen Boudreau, Truro, Bridget and Isaac MacLean, Green Hill. Cremation to take place under the direction of Eagles Funeral Home. At Rosie’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service, private family burial to take place at a later date in the Stillman Cemetery. The family wish to express their sincere appreciation to the 2nd floor staff of Valley View Villa for the excellent care provided to Rosie and her family over the time she was a resident and to Dr. Forbes for his excellent care over the years Donations in Rosie’s memory can be made to St. Lukes United Church, Saltsprings or the Palliative Care Society of Pictou County.
