Obituary of Richard Hawboldt

Richard Archibald Hawboldt, age 99 , formerly of Westville passed away Saturday, September 21, 2013 in High Crest Place, New Glasgow where he had made his home for the past 4 years. Born in Westville he was a son of the late Archibald and Mary (Scully) Hawboldt. Richard was a coal miner in his early working days. He enlisted in the Canadian Army with the Nova Scotia Highlanders in 1939 and transferred to the North Novies in 1940. In June, 1941 he went overseas under the 3rd Division and in 1944 under the West Novies, he went to Po Valley, Italy where he was wounded on August 29, 1944. Richard returned to Canada on Feb. 21, 1945. After the war, Richard went back to the coal mine until an injury in 1956. He became a Fisheries Officer in 1958 with the N.S. Department of Fisheries until retirement. He will be dearly missed by daughters, Mary MacKeigan (Mel) Westville Road; Dorothy Rogers, Westville; Pauline Melanson, Quebec; sons, Bob (Sylvia), Churchville; Richard, Mt. William; Paul Melanson (Sharon), Stellarton as well as a special niece, Cookie Lamey, Springville; son-in-law Wayne Wade, New Glasgow; 31 grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren. Richard was predeceased by his wife, Eliza (Keddy); daughters, Sally MacDonald and Judy Wade; an infant daughter, Georgina; sons-in-law, John MacDonald; Theodore “Ted” Rogers; brothers, Charles, Chester and James Hawboldt and sisters, Viola MacCulloch and Loretta MacFadden. . Visitations were held 2-4 pm and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday from Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 35 conducted a service at 6:30 Tuesday at the Funeral Home. His funeral service was held Wednesday at 2p.m. from Eagles Funeral Home Chapel, Westville with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Burial was in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
