Obituary of Henrietta Baker

Henrietta “Etta” (Dykens) Baker, age 88, Westville, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 29, 2014 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Springhill on August 22, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Elsie (Swanwick) Dykens of Stellarton. She had worked at the Pictou Shipyards as a burner during the war. In later years, she worked at Eaton’s and the Metropolitan Department Store. Etta enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards, and weekends at the camp at Dryden’s Lake. She was a great fan of feeding wildlife in her back yard and loved dogs. She was “Nanny Baker” to many kids she babysat over the years. She was a member of St. Paul United Church. She will be dearly missed by daughter, Darlene Baker-MacDonald; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Margie, Jim and Kathleen, and Alfie and Cathy, all of Westville; grandchildren, Barbie Rogers, Trevor Baker, Joey Baker, Donna Baillie, Rachel Baker and Carole Norris; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sister Elaine Turnbull, Stellarton; brothers, Fraser Dykens (Louise) and Baker Dykens (Winnie), Stellarton; sisters-in-law, Lois Dykens, Springville and Frances Dykens, Stellarton. She was predeceased by her husband James; infant daughter Bonita; sisters, Violet Carrigan, Thelma (James Langille and Chester Falt); brothers, Robert Dykens, Danny Dykens (Betty Dunbar) and Malcolm Dykens; brother-in-law, Jim Turnbull; son-in-law Walter MacDonald; great-grandson Aiden Baker; and 2 infant sisters, Dorothy and Maxine Dykens. Cremation has taken place. Her family received visitors on Sunday at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. Her memorial service was held 1 o’clock Monday, September 1, from Eagles Funeral Chapel, Westville with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Burial was in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
