Obituary of Lily Brimicombe
Lily Georgina (Grist) Brimicombe, age 94, Hoyt Street, Westville, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 14, 2015 .
Born February 1, 1921 in Yiewsley, England, she was a daughter of the late George and May (Humphrey) Grist.
In her early years, Lily worked at Boyd’s Bakery, Henry Stoneystreet’s Confectionery and Mrs. Diamond’s Clothing Store, and the Steart House, what is now the Carmichael Stewart Museum . However, Mom was a “Home-Maker” in every sense of the word! Her life revolved around her husband and children, as well as the “extra ones” who liked to come visit. Her motto seemed to be “there is always room for one more!”
Lily was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Westville, the Barbara MacKenzie Auxiliary, a former member of the Mother’s Club for the Dunvegan Girls Pipe Band, and the Westville Heritage Club. She also very much enjoyed the meetings of the Salvation Army Women’s Group, The Home League. In addition, she helped initiate one of the first groups in the area to work for children with learning disabilities. She was very proud to say she was a member of the first Girl Guide Company in Westville. Mom loved animals, and will be missed by her two cats. She also loved her gardens and spending time at “the cottage”. While caring for us all, she still found time for painting, reading, and assembling miniature models of carriages and horses. Lily was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt.
She will be sadly missed by her children, Gina McCulloch (Dave Lundie), Shubenacadie; Cheryl (Gary) Ward, Little Harbour; Donna (Bill) Scott, Trenton; Dave (Jolene), Mt. William; Sandra (Mike) McCulloch, Springville; Eric (Maureen), Trenton; Alice (Harold) MacKay, Trenton; Alta (Tom) Owen, New Glasgow; Ray, Halifax; eighteen grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers, Wilfred (Helen) Grist, New Glasgow, Walter (Jessie) Grist, Kentville, sister-in-law Jackie Grist, Hamilton, Ont.; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, George, son Peter; brothers, George in childhood, and Frank Grist; sisters, Alma Roy and Daisy MacNeil; infant niece Heather; and an infant grandson Jacob.
Mrs. Brimicombe rested at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville with Thursday . Her funeral service was held 3 o’clock Thursday from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Westville with Rev. Bonnie Wynn officiating. Spring burial will be in Auburn Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Westville, the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, or the V.O.N.
