Obituary of James Dorie

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of James Arthur “Jim” Dorie, 65, New Glasgow, following a long battle with cancer. He was the son of George and “Tiny” (Lipton) Dorie of Pictou, formerly of Westville. Jim grew up in Westville and Antigonish. After high school he moved to Sudbury, Ont., where he worked at INCO for seven years, then to Fort McMurray where he was an employee of Syncrude for thirty years. After retirement in 2006, he and his wife, Jeanne, moved back to New Glasgow where Jim dove into his lifetime passion of singing and songwriting. A consummate storyteller, Jim released three folk albums that tell honest stories of real events and local people. In 2013 Jim was thrilled to be nominated for an ECMA for “Ghosts of Pictou County.” In addition to his music, Jim was also an avid motorcyclist. He was a founding member of the Harley Owners Group in Fort McMurray and was its first president. Along with other motor cyclists, he worked on many annual toy drives known as Toys for Tots. Jim was also a certified first aid instructor during his tenure with INCO. Jim is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jeanne (Campbell); his parents; mother-in-law Ruth Campbell; son, Jason (Sara Michener), Petaluma, California; daughters, Heather Carrier (Raymond), St. John’s Newfoundland; Holly (James Sutton), Vancouver, BC; brother George Dorie (Debbie), Kamloops, BC; sisters June Smith, Edmonton AB; Mary MacDonald (Dan) Greenhill, NS and Pamela Murphy, Langley, BC; the light of his life, only grandchild, Evan Carrier. Jim is also survived by nine nephews. He was predeceased by his father-in-law, John Campbell and brother-in-law, Phillip Murphy. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jim’s life will take place at a later date under the care of Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. The family would like to thank the VON and the palliative care team who provided such excellent care to Jim and support to our family during these difficult months.
