Obituary of George Dorie

The passing occurred on December 11 of George Francis Dorie, 91, Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou, formerly of Westville. He was the son of the late Charles and Josephine (Wilkie) Dorie. George lived most of his life in Westville, except for the 1960’s when he moved his wife and five children to Antigonish, and four years in the 1980’s when he and his wife relocated to Abbotsford, British Columbia. George was an employee of Trenton Works for over forty years. He owned and operated a pool hall for 11 years, first in Antigonish, then in Westville. He was also well known in card circles as an accomplished ‘old school’ poker player, a passion that kept his mind and his wit keen until the very end. George is survived by his wife of 70 years, Aquinas “Tiny” (Lipton), Pictou; George Jr. (Debbie), Kamloops, BC; daughters June Smith, Edmonton AB; Mary MacDonald(Dan) Greenhill, NS Pamela Murphy, Langley, BC; and daughter-in-law Jeanne Dorie, New Glasgow. He is also survived by a brother Charles, Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou and a sister, Jeane Holmes, Boston, MA along with 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Sadly, he was predeceased earlier this week by his eldest son, Jim . He was also predeceased by his son-in-law, Phillip Murphy; sisters Annie MacDonald and Mary Cameron and brothers, Henry, Eddie, Bobby and Bernie. George rewsted at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville with visiting on Sunday f His funeral mass was held 11 am on Monday December 14 at Church of the Holy Name, Westville. Interment was in the Holy Name Cemetery. Donations in his memory maybe made to a charity of one’s choice. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou, as well as the co-ordinator and students from the NSCC Continuing Care Program who provided such excellent care to Dad. Their gentle, loving kindness was a source of comfort and support for Mom and the rest of our family.
