Obituary of Donald MacMillan
Donald Britton MacMillan (1931-2016), passed away July 17, 2016 in Pictou after a brief illness.
He was the only child of the late John C. and Jennifer (Russell) MacMillan of Stellarton.
Don served 27 years in the RCMP (Reg. #16702) at numerous postings in Newfoundland, Ontario, Alberta, and Nova Scotia, retiring in 1977 as a Sergeant. He was a competitive handgun and rifle shooter and took particular pride in coaching “a handful of prairie farm kid Sea Cadets” to consecutive wins of the Duke of Edinburgh Ships Bell Trophy in rifle competitions against all other British Commonwealth cadet corps. Don was a very active and social person, over the years enjoying playing rugby, hockey, baseball, curling, darts, hunting, fishing, sailing (several times in the Marblehead Race), gardening, cards, and Legion activities. As his health declined he remained a veracious reader, Blue Jays fan and story teller. (“Yes you’ve heard it before and now you’re going to hear it again.” ?)
Don was predeceased by his wife Florence (Pike).
He is survived by sons Donald “Mac”, Habitant, NS, and John, Abbotsford, B.C.
Cremation has taken place. A private interment will take place at a later date. We wish to express our appreciation for the caring and professional services of Ms. Tammy MacKenzie (Director) and the staff of the Shiretown Nursing Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. Condolences may be sent through www.eaglesfuneralhome.ca
