Obituary of Jessie Miller
Jessie Anna Miller,89, of Valley View Villa, formerly of New Glasgow and Island East River, passed away on September 12, 2016 at the Aberdeen Hospital with her caregiver, Mary Jane MacKenzie and niece, Ruth Sutherland by her side.
Born on February 6, 1927, she was the youngest of eight children of the late John and Christina (MacMillan) Russell, Centredale, NS.
Jessie graduated from New Glasgow High School and attended Normal Collage in Truro. She taught rural schools in Pictou County. In 1948 she married her husband of 60 years, Robert A. Miller, deceased (2009)and together they operated the family dairy farm in Island East River. She also supply taught in elementary schools during her working years. Robert and Jessie later lived on Grant Street , New Glasgow.
Jessie gained comfort from church, friends and family. She was a member of St. Columba United, Hopewell and in later years attended Trinity United, New Glasgow where she also served in Unit C, UCW. She was a life member of Springville Island Women's Institute, a 4-H Club Leader with SBI Garment Club, participated in a Shepherd's Lunch Program, was a member of 55 Plus Club, New Glasgow and a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia. Jessie enjoyed bowling, walking, visiting, knitting and all handwork.
She is survived by her brother Fred Russell (Pearl), Wallace, NS, and her sister-in-law Betty Russell, Stellarton, family friend James McRae, and several nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her chosen grandchildren Tanner Himmelman, Island East River, Parker Doggit and Carter Doggit, Bridgewater.
Besides her husband Robert, Jessie was predeceased by her son, John Robert "Bobby" in August, her sister Catherine Isabel (Russell) Oliver and five Russell brothers, William, Ross, Robert, Hugh and Charles.
Mrs. Miller rested at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville with visiting on Saturday. Her funeral service was held 1 o’clock Sunday from St. Columba United Church, Hopewell, with the Rev. Bonnie Fraser officiating. Burial was in Springville Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
