Obituary of Fred Polley

Frederick Archibald Polley, 88 of Westville formerly of Sydney passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 24, 2016 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Harold and Elma ((Fricker) Polley. Fred was a long service employee of Canadian National Railways and after retiring continued to work in various positions within the industry including Transport Canada. In addition to his railway career Fred was active in the Canadian Armed Forces and retired as a Major from the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp. He was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Westville, and had been active in the St. Andrews Society, Rotary Club, Heritage Society and was a Past Master of the Western Star Masonic Lodge. Fred will be dearly missed by his wife, Sarah “Sally” (MacLellan); daughter, Lynn Verwijs (Hans), Calgary; son Jan, Toronto; sisters Muriel Sallis, B.C., Vera Aitken (Percy), Moncton and Marjorie Ells, Wolfville. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Patricia and brothers David and Harold. Fred rested at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville on Monday His funeral service was held 11 o’clock Tuesday from Eagles Funeral Chapel, Westville with the Rev. Bonnie Wynn officiating. Fred will be transferred to Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sydney with visiting on Tuesday from 7-9 pm. A private grave side service will be held on Wednesday at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Family flowers only, donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
