Cathy Chesnutt

Obituary of Cathy Chesnutt

Cathy Marie Chesnutt, 55, of New Glasgow, formerly of Union Centre, Pictou County passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 30 at her cottage on Pictou Island, the place she loved so much. Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd and Isabelle (Cameron) Chesnutt. After attending West Pictou, Cathy took hairdressing at the vocational school in Stellarton. For the rest of her life, Cathy would grace the kitchens of her friends and family with her scissors and satire. Cathy turned her casual job at Glen Haven into a career for 15 years as a Personal Care Worker. Later in life, she decided to go back to school at NSCC – Pictou Campus taking Business Administration. From there, she worked with Sobeys as a Data Entry Clerk and then Truro Hospital as an Administrative Assistant. For the last 16 years, she has been working for the Public Health Authority as an Administrative Assistant. Her colleagues there will miss her ability to tell it like it is with her sharp wit and unfailing humour. She was their shining beacon. For over 20 years, Cathy had been a part-time resident of Pictou Island and her island family could always count on “Princess” to bring a smile to their face. She had been a part of the Pictou Island Community Association for numerous years by participating in various committees as well as serving as director and secretary. Pictou Island became her happy place and in later years if she wasn't there, she was thinking about being there. Cathy had overcome many medical and physical challenges in her life and was an inspiration to all who knew her since losing a limb two years ago. She was so loud and boisterous that most people never noticed the quiet things she did unless she did them for you and then they spoke volumes. Her presence will be greatly missed by those who loved her. In her happy place, the princess fell asleep in her castle, never to awake again. Cathy will be sadly missed by her brothers and sisters, Jimmy, Riverton; Jeanne (Kate), Lornevale; Joanie Salter (Henry), Pleasant Valley; Nancy MacDonald (Al), Pictou Island; Ruth Laseur (Theresa), Alberta; Tony (Tina), Halifax; her nieces and nephews and her special friends Lorraine and Bill MacMillan, who became a second mother and brother to Cathy. Visitations were held Thursday, August 17th from 6-9 p.m. at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. Her funeral service was held at 2:45 pm on Friday, August 18th at the Pictou Island Church, with Bonnie Langille officiating. Cathy was laid to rest in the Pictou Island Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Pictou Island Community Association or the charity of your choice.
