Obituary of Donald Creighton
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our father, Major William Donald Creighton (Don) at the age of 91 years. He has joined our mother, Shirley (Campbell), the love of his life.
Dad had a long and distinguished military career. He joined the Canadian Army at the end of World War II and served during the Korean War with the 2nd Regiment of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. He would later serve with our peacekeeping forces in Cyprus and in a number of postings within Canada with both the Army and the Royal Canadian Navy. Passionate about Canada’s military history he would take a particular interest in Westville, Nova Scotia’s War Memorial Park and the Pictou County Military Museum.
Dad retired in 1973 and moved back to Nova Scotia where he and Mom built their home on his grandfather’s land in West River. He joined the volunteer fire department where he became chief, was on the Saint John Ambulance First Aid board of directors, and worked at the Greenhill fire tower then the Housing Authority. In 1977 he earned his B.Ed. at St. Francis Xavier University and taught math at West Pictou for 10 years.
Dad is survived by his three children, Deborah (Peter Coffin), Wendy (Andre Lacroix), and Donald (Karen), as well as 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
We would like to thank the staff at the Veteran’s Unit in Pictou for their care and compassion for Dad during his short stay and for all the Veterans who reside there.
There will be no visitation or funeral service by request. Interment will be in Durham Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of Eagles Funeral Home, Westville.
In lieu of flowers please consider donations to the Pictou County Military Museum, 2020 Queen Street, Westville, NS, B0K 2A0.
