Mae Elizabeth Hughes, age 93, Temperance Street, Westville, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2009 in Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow.
Born in Westville, she was a daughter of the late John and Jessie (MacIvor) Parsons.
She was an adherent of St. Paul United Church, Westville. She worked for the Red Cross while living in Toronto and after returning to Nova Scotia, continued her volunteer work with various organizations, including the Pictou County Seniors Help Line and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed her pets and took a great interest in gardening. The matriarch of the family, she was known as "Nanny Hughes".
Mrs. Hughes will be sadly missed by her daughters, Betty DeYoung (Jim), Antigonish; Diane Lamey (Harry), Westville; daughter in law Betty Langille (Bill), Scotsburn; eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by sister Leah Falconer, Jeddore; brothers, Calvin Parsons (Marg), Jeddore; Angus Parsons (Arlene), Sarnia; sister in law Elsie Hughes, Westville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Sam; son Sammy; sister Louise Bartlett; and brother Bob and sister in law Lois Parsons.
Visitations were held at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. Her funeral service was from Eagles Funeral Chapel, Westville with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Burial in the Auburn Cemetery, Westville.
