I first met Kevin through basketball as a high school teammate. This turned out to be the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Who couldn't love that "knee slapping" laugh and the way he looked you straight in the eye in conversation. He just wouldn't be denied if he chose you, and thankfully so. Kevin's friendship was a genuine as it gets.
As we remember our friend, I'm sure some smiles will begin to creep in to join the tears. Farewell Kevin.
To Anne & Allie and to Donna, Cheryl, and Marsha......we are thinking of you and send on our heartfelt condolences for your profound loss.

I knew this guy for approximately 40 years.... He made me laugh every time we met, even though he regularly insulted me for fun! :)
I loved this guy.
He was fun, smart, irreverent, insightful, common sensical...
He and I reffed a men's league game many years ago at Sackville High on a Friday night when he was simply out of patience (it was a 'crazy game' ) and just walked out the door.
"Eddy, I've had it! From now on, I will only ref games that have coaches, " he said. What a strange feeling as it's just you and two teams staring at a gym door slamming as he left! And he stuck with that concept to this day. btw, he made a good decision.
He was the manager of food services at X the past # of years. So, we had so many chances to interact - so much fun! He helped us with our daughter Kate McHugh and Alistair McDougall 's wedding - always fun and as helpful as can be.
Shelly and I are headed to X for the national Special Olympics in a few weeks. This past Friday evening, Kevin and I were communicating about a shortage of basketball referees for the upcoming national Special Olympics in Antigonish. and how could we solve that problem... He initiated the call.
Now......
silence......
I (and many more) am/are lost, but I more thinking about his spouse Anne - they married just last summer in a fun-filled celebration .. Peace...to her, and all of Kevin's family.
A wonderful soul. We miss you pal.. peace..

On July 14th, myself and other members of the basketball referees fraternity received some sad news when we learned of the passing of Kevin Fraser....Kevin was a staunch supporter of our Coal Bowl and many times travelled from the mainland to referee in our tournament ...but refereeing wasn't all he contributed...he had a great sense of humor and was a friend to the many fans with whom he met in his games...my only thoughts about him since I heard of his passing is that he was an all - around great person who loved life to the fullest...our community of referees has lost I good one...he will be missed by all those who had the honor of being his friend....sincere condolences to his wife, Ann, and his daughter....RIP Kevin...

It was my pleasure and honor to get to spend time with Kevin and get to know him for his kind spirit and sharp wit. Although we never lived within 2,000 miles of one another, he made Aimee and I feel like close friends of his every time we were together in Florida. We also feel so fortunate to have been there for your wedding last Summer and see him so happy. Please know that you and all of Kevin’s extended family are in our prayers during this difficult time.

Growing up in small town, Hantsport NS, meant that a “new kid in town” was something special. Well, that just about nailed it for Kevin, or “Joey” as he was soon affectionately labelled! In a town ripe with nicknames, we already had a Doc, a Mouse, a Squirrel, a Star, a Doogie, a Moses, a Chink, and no doubt many more that slip the mind as I write, but we didn’t have a Joey! Joey changed the dynamics of our gang and everyone he met! I co-captained our high school basketball team with him in 1970 and I’m pretty sure it was Joey who convinced us all to fail Grade 11 so that we’d have “one more shot” at the Provincial Title. As I remember, my Christmas report card had me well on my way to do just that!
Life has a way of separating good old friends. It’s been years since our paths crossed, but I find myself deeply saddened by this news! My heart goes out to Kevin’s family and many friends! Please accept our deepest condolences.

I was saddened to hear of Joey's passing. Growing up in Hantsport I have great memories of watching him play basketball and generally "hanging around town" with Joey in the group. I reconnected with him over dinner back in 2002 while visiting Trudy Murray Power in Goose Bay. I had the pleasure of meeting Allie that night at Trudy's and we shared some great laughs. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time. Beth

I was stunned to learn of Kevin's untimely passing. Perhaps it will help to lessen the sorrow of Kevin's death to realize that so many of his friends share your grief. I have so many fond memories of Kevin as he was so passionate about the game of basketball and he provided his pearls of wisdom to a group of us who were inspiring to become the best officials we could be. We talked often about high school games, university games and how fortunate we were to work some of the best basketball in Canada. Some of my fondest memories of Kevin are when we all showed up at the Windsor Warlords basketball tournaments and outside the door would be Frank Baldwin listening to Roger, Reggie, Hughie and Kevin arguing about everything under the sun. If you didn't know the difference, you would have though we hated each other. Of course, the next day we all had to go to the gym to prove who was the best foul shooter. Clearly, we were reliving our younger days. At that time, all Kevin could think about was his sweetheart Anne. Kevin and I also shared many experiences at the Coal Bowl where we talked basketball from dawn to dusk. I will forever remember the night his favorite converse sneakers were unexpectedly burnt by his beloved friend Hughie. I also appreciate the number of times Kevin offered me advice concerning the food services industry (and enjoyed the free meals he provided). Kevin often mentioned his daughter Allie during our conversations and said she was much smarter than him, followed by his infectious laugh. Some of our senior officials shared their fond memories of Kevin with me over the last couple of days. He was loved by all and will be missed. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. I pray your courage and strength helps you move through this rough time. Our love is with you.
