I did not know him well but remember him when he was VP at PRVS and he was always very good to the students and whenever I did run into him, I always said hi even though he would probably not know me with all the students that passed through the door at PRVS. So Bonnie, please accept my condolences on the loss of your husband Don and know that I think of you, Paul, David, Stevie and Cathie often even though we have not spoken in many years. You all are never far from my thoughts. Take care and God bless.

Bob and Colleen Parker posted a condolence
Thursday, May 7, 2020
Pictou County has lost a giant of a man in Donald MacKenzie, of Alma. Colleen and I offer our sincere sympathies to Bonnie and family and to Don’s two daughters, Donna and Heather.
One couldn’t help but look up to Don, way way up. But all my life, I looked up to ‘Long Donald’ for a whole lot more reasons than his height. In a strange coincidence, two of my fondest memories of Don have to do with a very short stretch of highway in Durham, right in front of the Durham Presbyterian Church, where he was a long time elder, choir member and so much more. When I was only five or six years old, the old Sunday School building was across the road from the church and a large crowd of young people needed to safely cross that busy highway, every Sunday. It was very comforting to me as a small lad, to see this big, tall man stopping traffic, protecting us all. Don was ‘the protector’, as he was in many ways and for many people his whole life.
Move ahead fifty years to pork suppers at the ‘new’ Durham Church Hall and I was proud to serve with Don helping to park cars, protecting people, this time mostly seniors, on that same small stretch of highway. Again Don was ‘the protector’. Don always looked after the rest of us ‘on duty’ with lots of safety gear, ‘on loan’ from the Alma Fire Department.
Don served many roles over his long life in Pictou County, as a teacher, a Church elder, Fire Chief, Emergency Measures Coordinator, Councillor, great family man and more.
To me, you were protecting people all your life and making them feel safe, just like you did on that small stretch of highway in Durham.
Thank you Don, (Long Donald), I respected you and considered you a true friend.
We will all miss you, Bob

To the MacKenzie family Marsha and I would like to express our deepest condolences on Don's passing. I remember my first meeting with Donnie, as he was on the interview board of PRVS, for my job interview there back in 1986. He made me feel very welcomed, and as my vice principal for subsequent years until his retirement at PRVS, he was a pleasure and gentleman to work for!! Again our thoughts are with you at this time.
