Obituary of Donald MacKenzie

It is with heavy hearts that we collectively announce the sudden passing of Donald Robert MacKenzie of Alma on April 29, 2020. Donald was born May 31, 1934 and lived his entire life in Alma, Pictou County staying close to the family farm and the land he loved. He and his father together built a house for his own family and he recently sharpened those very tools as a COVID-19 isolation activity having watched a YouTube video. Donald loved cars and all things mechanical and went from being a Mechanic at V-Eight Motors to teaching the first class of Auto Mechanics at Pictou Regional Vocational School (now NSCC). He retired from PRVS as Vice-Principal. Donald had a passion for firefighting. He was a founding member of both the Alma Volunteer Fire Department and the Pictou County Ground Search and Rescue Organization. He served as the Alma Fire Chief for many years and was a familiar face at fire and rescue scenes, doing whatever needed to be done for others. He was the first Regional Emergency Management Coordinator for Pictou County, a position he held for several years. Donald was an Elder in the Durham Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. On more than one occasion he’s been known for making a quick exit, with robes flapping, if a fire call happened to come in on a Sunday morning. Donald was predeceased by his parents (Russell, Elspeth), his sister Mary, his first wife Lorena (MacIntosh) and their infant daughter Janice. He is survived by his wife, Bonita, daughters Donna Gallant (Gordon), Heather MacKenzie-Carey (Rick), stepdaughter Cathe Demetre, stepsons Stephen Demetre (Anna), Paul Demetre (Lisa) and David Demetre (Sara), as well as numerous grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. His family brought great joy to his life. We share in our loss a husband, father, grandfather, friend, mentor, and leader. He gave as much love as he received For the safety of family and friends, there will be no visitations or funeral service at this time. Services will take place at a later date.
