Joanne, Mike, Jon, Andrew & families,
We were very saddened to learn of Hughie's passing. As we watched Jim conduct Hugh's service we smiled & laughed as he recounted Mitchell Street memories. Hugh was larger than life - you couldn't help but be drawn by his gregarious personality. Jim mentioned the block parties. Some of Hugh's best party moments were after dark as he held court at the guys' table. Stories & laughter flowed freely. Our common connections in PEI were a great conversation starter. Those chats made us feel that much more at home away from home.
Please accept our sincere condolences. You will continue to be in our thoughts..

I grew up hearing many stories about Hughie or as my Grandmother Mary SIM Ross would call him “Hugh Robert”. I remember going to Westville with her to visit Effie. As I grew older I played Rugby against Hughie with him wearing the Blue and White of Westville and I the Green and White of New Glasgow. I remember his van Jo and the St. Bernard. I had the pleasure of doing business with him as well as spending time talking sports and having a cold one. Godspeed Hughie!

But the friendship is rooted much deeper than just the hockey days. During my sons health crisis Hughie, Joanne, Mike, John and Andrew were by his side the entire time. How fitting to see the words..A champion is someone who gets up even when he cant'. These are the values that Hughie instilled in all the people's lives he touched. He certainly touched our lives. Hughie and I did a lot of business over the years, and I quickly learned that it was "elbows up" when his time came to fight for a client's interests - which he did honestly, cleanly, and with attention to timelines, details, and ethics. When he said something was approved, it was; and if it wasn't, I could confidently tell a client that "it can't be done." As a neighbour, we had many the "pediconference" to discuss a file from his porch, and I knew I could take any update literally to the bank. We weren't always on the same side, but whether our interests were congruent or contradictory, I knew I could respect what Hughie would do and that I could expect the same in return. To borrow from "another" financial institution, "banking will not be this easy" going forward. Peace.

I was so sorry to hear of Hughie's passing. I have such fond memories of him both, from our growing up and competing on the ball fields and rinks of Pictou County, as well as from our both, working, for Scotiabank for so many years. He was, quite simply, a great guy, in all respects and someone who will be missed by many, including me. I was so glad I got to see you and him, at the restaurant, in downtown New Glasgow, last year, when a number of us went "home" to see Rawlins Cross, at the Wellness Centre. It was so nice to "catch up". While being very disappointed that I can't be in Westville to pay my respects, in person, please know that you, the boys and their families, are all in my thoughts and prayers. Take care.
