I just found out today, of Mel's passing. Very sad. I started my career with NSP Trenton Generating Station with Melvin as my mentor. He was the lead operator on shift #5 (Melvin, John H. (JB), Lane H., Mike R., Bert, Freddy W.) We worked and laughed together from 1981 to 1988. We cooked amazing dinners on shift including the fresh salmon that came into our plant. Mel always brightened the control room with his stories of life. I have seen Mel a few times since 1988 and we chatted on Facebook a few times as well. I remember being at the Fort Mac airport and someone was yelling out my name, it was Mel and he had the biggest smile ever! My condolences to his family and may we all cherish the good times we had together.

I had the pleasure of working with Melvin in the Fort McMurray area. He contributed to the most positive work environment I ever participated in. He brought humor to the workplace with his treasure trove of stories. He got his work done while lifting up all those around him. Melvin's contribution to the morale was priceless. You couldn't possibly be upset if he was nearby. Melvin could sit comfortably alongside a pauper or a king and bring joy to all. He will be dearly missed.

I’ll never forget when Melvin visited my grandma (Evelyn McKay) after my grandpa (Don McKay) passed away in 2019. The 3 of us sat outside grandma’s beautiful home on Sherbrooke Road, and Melvin told beautiful stories of Thorburn which made grandma smile.
Condolences to everyone who is hurting right now.

Worked at the carpet plant with Mel. I was a young man of 25 or so. He approached me to make conversation, after a bit he said " Joe, do you want to sling yarn and work like this for the rest of your life?" He recommended power engineering and the courses to start takin, website for online school." He always instilled upon me that I could do better and not settle just for a paycheque, built my self esteem. I didn't go into power engineering but I couldn't have succeeded without his echoing words and motivation he gave me that been with me for 25 years later. Cheers Mel Thank you. ❤️
Condolences to your family, friends and loved ones.
