Obituary of Wilma Christine Cameron

Obituary Wilma Christine Cameron

August 14, 1935 - July 22, 2024

Wilma Christine (Murray) Cameron of Hazel Glen, Pictou County, passed peacefully away on July 22, 2024 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow after a short illness.

Wilma was born in the old Aberdeen Hospital to the late William I. and Jennie (Gordon) Murray on August 14, 1935. The third of four girls, she was raised on the Murray family farm in Gairloch. She graduated from Westville High School (1953) and Nova Scotia Normal College (1954) where she developed a lifelong love of learning and teaching. She started her teaching career in East St. Marys and later taught in Landsdowne, Rocklin, and Mill Brook. Wilma met and married her fabulous dance partner, Jim Cameron, on July 6, 1963. Together, they built a home and raised five children on Oliver Road in Hazel Glen. As children came along, she stopped her formal teaching career and became a tireless volunteer for many organizations including the Middle River Gairloch Womens Institute, St. Andrews (Westville & Gairloch) Womens Missionary Society and Middle River 4-H Club. She was a long time secretary of the Gairloch Cemetary Committee and was an elder at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Westville. Whatever was happening, you could be sure Wilma would be there at the center, working hard, with a pan of biscuits in hand. In later years, she became an avid bowler with the Womens Insitute and Friends League and supported the Pictou County Council of Churches. When Jimmie started the blueberry farm she became the financial officer and supervisor of operations and maintained an interest in the operation long after the farm passed along to the boys. She was never idle and the family home was always a popular drop in spot for the children of Oliver Road and later her grandchildren. Her laughter rang out wherever she was.

Wilma is survived by her daughter, Ruth (David Oxford); sons Peter (Corinne), Bill (Daphne), David (Anita) and Earle (Christina); grandchildren Kaitlin (Richard and son Ethan), Skylar, Bailey, Shelby, Tyson, David (Dallys), Tim, Josh, James, and Renee. She is also survived by sister-in-law Evelyn Millen and numerous treasured cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John James (Jimmie)Cameron in 2005, sisters Madeline (John Alex) MacQuarrie, Annie (Bobby) Sample, and Florence (Percy) Oliver as well as Jim's siblings Sam, Dorothy (Murray) Jardine, Willard (Annie), Ernie, Donald (Marie).

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Eagles Funeral Home, Westville from where visitation will be held on Friday, July 26 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 27 at 11:00 AM from St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Westville, Nova Scotia with Rev. Gail Johnson-Murdock officiating. Burial will be at St. Andrews Cemetary, Gairloch. Memorial donations in Wilma's memory can be made to St. Andrews Cemetary, Gairloch, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Westville or a charity of your choice.

The family wishes to extend our gratitude to the staff of the Pictou County VON who cared for Mom over the past few years and the staff of the Aberdeen Hospital who made her final days just a little more comfortable.
